It begins to glow with a bright yellow light and he quickly drops it, in fear. He looks at his hand, and sees that they are alright. He glances once more at the mushroom on the ground, but no glow seems to come from it now. Taking a deep breath, he gently picks up the mushroom again from the ground and it begins to glow once more. He does not drop it again this time, but takes it to his aunt in excitement.
âLook Aunt Nana, look Aunt Nana, see what I foundâ he happily shouts. He reaches his aunt, who has paused in her weeding, to look at him with a weary smile. She says, âI see that you have found a red mushroom, Jeremiah. But you know what I told you about mushrooms.â Nodding his head rapidly, Jeremiah says, âI know, Aunt Nana. But this mushroom is special. Itâ¦It gggâ¦llowss.â Unfortunately for Jeremiah, the red mushroom remains as it is â just red. Aunt Anansewah says patiently, with a gentle touch on his head, âA mushroom, red or not, does not glow, my child. Now, if you have finished your breakfast, I would like you to help me pull off the weeds over there,â his aunt, finishes, pointing in a direction to her left. âOk, Aunt Nanaâ, Jeremiah says in a low voice, disappointed that the mushroom refuses to glow.
He looks at the red mushroom in his hand as he walks away and is about to throw it away, when it begins to glow, once more. He wants to shout out to his aunt about the glow from the mushroom, but keeps his mouth firmly shut. He carefully puts it away in his pouch hanging on the branch of the cocoa tree. He washes his hand, with the water from the can and goes back to finish his interrupted breakfast. He later joins his aunt, who is still doing some weeding and helps her to clear some weeds she had pointed out to him earlier. Aunt Anansewah rests awhile under a shade of a mango tree and eats her breakfast of coconut rice and fish. She watches Jeremiah as he pulls off some weeds. âHe could act funny sometimes,â she thinks as she drinks water from her can. âImagine, thinking that a mushroom can glow.â
They work an hour more at the farm, before heading back home. Jeremiah is excited about the mushroom he has in his pouch. He canât wait to get home to look at it. âI think it is magic,â he says quietly to himself as he walks behind his aunt. Later that same day, while his aunt is asleep in her room, Jeremiah brings out the mushroom once more and looks at it. It begins to glow in the dark. Aunt Anansewah enters his room minutes later to check in on him. He puts away the mushroom hurriedly, not sure, if his aunt would be pleased that he had brought it home with him
